The city of Nizhny Novgorod founded in 1221 is a wonderful ancient center of the Volga region. It is situated in the central European part of Russia, about 400 km east of Moscow, at the confluence of the Volga and the Oka rivers.

A sign of an ancient city of Russia is the Kremlin on the high bank of the Volga that has been preserved since the early 16-th century.

 

Brilliant examples of old Russian architecture are the architectural ensemble of the Nizhny Novgorod Trade Fair that became a subcenter of the city in the 19th century, making the trade fair one of the biggest in Russia and Europe, and numerous churches and monasteries.
   

More than 600 unique historical, architectural and cultural monuments were preserved in Nizhny Novgorod and its vicinities, for example, the famous Makariev Monastery. UNESCO included the city into the list of 100 world cities, which are of historical and cultural value.
Nizhny Novgorod belongs to the five most populated and industrially developed cities of Russia, is a center of the Nizhny Novgorod region and a recognized capital of the Volga economic region. It is a big business and industrial center. Business rhythm and search for new technologies guarantee its economic success in the third millennium.

The climate of Nizhny Novgorod is similar to the climate of Moscow. The weather in Nizhny Novgorod in December is variable, typically cold with daily temperatures ranging from -1 to -20 C  and snow.

The Russian payment and monetary unit is ROUBLE. 
Foreing currency is not accepted. One can exchange foreign currency in the city. 
The American dollars and the Euros are the most widely accepted currency all over Russia.
The exchange rate is variable, at the present it is 1 Euro ~ 40 Roubles, 1 US Dollar ~ 31 Roubles. 
Traveller's cheques can be cashed at the commission of 2 or 3%. 
Credit cards are relatively widely accepted in Russia (practically only VISA or MASTER CARD). 
Payment with a credit card may sometimes incur a surcharge of a couple of per cents, 
so make sure you know if there are surcharges before you decide to run your card
